Editorial Photographer: Forging Your Creative Pathway

What does it truly entail to be an editorial photographer, and how do we define this specialized niche? Let’s look into the intricacies to capture unique editorial photos that leave a lasting impact.

Who is the Editorial Photographer?

An editorial photographer is an artist who is fully capable of conveying a story or mood through imagery. The editorial photographer must develop a skill set to truly render the decision to communicate a bold message and be able to captivate the audience. The theme can be a thought-provoking photo essay, an impactful cover, or a glamorous stylish billboard; the common points are to be able to narrate that story through composition and emotion that catch the eye and mind of the viewers.

How to Be an Editorial Photographer

To thrive in editorial photography, it’s crucial to possess a deep-seated passion for storytelling through captivating photographs. This pursuit demands preparation and dedication. Beyond these fundamental elements lies the execution phase, where meticulous attention to detail in both planning and bringing the creative vision to fruition takes center stage:

  • Conceptualization: Every compelling editorial photo begins with the seed of an idea.
  • Research: Understanding the nuances and intricacies of the subject matter you wish to capture.
  • Preparation: Scout locations, curate props, wardrobe and lighting settings. Every detail matters.

The Difference Between Editorial and other Types of Photography

During a fashion assignment, I focused solely on commercial photography, although there were instances where various photography genres intersected. The objectives of editorial photography are distinct from those of commercial photography.

Editorial photography, distinct from commercial photography, primarily aims to capture images that enrich narratives and experiences. In contrast, commercial photography focuses on creating images to promote products or services. I’d say editorial photography allows greater creative freedom.

Crafting Impactful Editorial Photos

Here are some tips for creating impactful editorial photos:

  • Relevance: Consider images that are relevant to the context.
  • Wording: Adding text to your photos can be an optimal option to provide additional context. For example, adding a speech bubble. Ensure that the wording has correct spelling to maintain professionalism
  • Take Responsibility: Be mindful of the subjects and narratives you choose. If controversial, be prepared for how they may be perceived.
  • Editing Techniques: In post-processing, you can focus on editing workflows to optimize your intended editorial photos.

Find Your Story

Diving deep into your subject is crucial, but finding your story also involves experimenting, executing, and repeating to craft your own narrative as a photographer. It’s essential to explore whether editorial photography aligns with your approach and personality.

Personally, editorial photography is a niche that I particularly enjoy because it allows me to narrate a story through an image or a series of photos. This aspect resonates well with my creative approach. Additionally, it complements the inclusion of text with photos, creating a powerful effect, such as on graphic designs like album or magazine covers.
