Choosing the Right Desert Location

Deserts offer a cinematic feel, thanks to their open terrain, rugged rock formations, and vast vistas. For my desert photoshoot, I chose a popular location in Phoenix. Since it was peak season, I had to do some research and hiking to escape the crowds and find the best vantage points. This type of setting provides a stunning backdrop for portraiture, high fashion, and glamour photography. Morning Desert Shoot, Managing the Harsh Light

Sunrises and sunsets are the optimal times for a desert photoshoot; otherwise, expect intense sunlight. For this session, we scheduled the shoot in the late morning when the light was already powerful. Here are the strategies I used to manage the harsh lighting:

  • Positioning: Find naturally shaded areas to soften the light. Choose the right angles and position your subject effectively to work the light in your favor.
  • Gear: Handy and compact light modifiers can help maintain control over highlights and shadows.
  • Angles: Shooting from a lower angle allows you to use the sky as a background while ensuring flattering light on the subject.

Ideas & Tips

To make the most of a desert shoot, outfit choice and styling play a crucial role. Preparation is also key to ensuring stunning results and a smooth, safe experience. Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Wardrobe: Colors like red or deep blue, along with flowing fabrics, work beautifully against the earthy desert scenery.
  • Desert Elements: Don’t shy away from incorporating natural props like cacti, dried branches, and textured rocks into your composition.
  • Themes: If you’re aiming for a conceptual or editorial look, consider adding a prop and experimenting with creative poses.
  • Stay Hydrated: The desert environment can be extreme, especially during certain times of the year or if long walks are required to find the perfect location. Carry water, wear sunscreen, and be mindful of your surroundings.
  • Check Permits: Some locations, such as state parks, may require a photography permit.
